The strength of our democracy lies in the dissemination
of information and these regional and vernacular
language newspapers, with their deep reach in the
hinterlands, can and play an effective role in the
propagation of democratic ideas and advantages of
people power.
As
a commemoration of the event, the NAI brought out
a colorful Souvenir. Needless to say, with the substantial
reach enjoyed by the Association, the Souvenir was
distributed not only among its members, but also
among leading personalities in the government, academia,
corporate and the intelligentsia.
Speech
by Dr. M.R. Gaur
General Secretary (NAI)
"
It seems, as if it was just yesterday that I along
with a couple of us stumbled on an idea of creating
a national platform for the unorganized and almost
marginalized print media of our country. The idea
was to give a voice to these voiceless in the national
capital and to raise the myriads of problems faced
by these newspapers with the authorities in Delhi.
Looking back, all these fifteen years, we have achieved
a lot more than that. I hope that you too would
agree. In the process we have been able to bring
to one platform more than 4000 vernacular and English
print media of this country. I have realized that
we are the real voice of the people as we have grassroots
representations. We take up issues which are people
centric, community centric and socio centric. Our
resources are meager but our outlook never dampens.
We have been steadfast in our resolve to put the
people's perspective.
I
would say that it has been fruitful fifteen years
during which we have nurtured and consolidated our
organization. Yes it is time to celebrate our achievements
but also the time to deliberate on our further actions.
There are still areas where we can make a mark,
areas where we have not ventured at all. We are
all aware that we are not a centralized institution
but rather a coordinating agency. We have to go
beyond. We have to make room for interactions amongst
our members. Our members should not be isolated
entities. Rather it should be a vibrant organization,
which reverberates with information exchange and
such. The bigger national level media has a penetration
only in and around our major cities and towns but
it is our membership which has a reach to the hinterland.
We do not have to be entertaining; rather we have
to focus on issues which affect the people. Serious,
ethical and professional journalism should be forte.
We
have a very long way to go, lot to achieve. Let
us not be complacent and rest on our past laurels.
We should strive to compete with ourselves. We are
also thinking in terms of creating a news agency
which will disseminate news and views amongst our
membership.
We
are not here to do any cutthroat business. We are
here for serving the people. And we shall do it
to the best of our abilities.
Arise
Awake and Stop not till the goal is reached."
Dr.
M.R.Gaur.
